Female authenticity at it's best!

I read Dawn O'Porter's 'Cows' a few years ago and I loved her style of writing, it is simple but effective and focusses on stories about realistic women and realistic problems. So this book was an easy sell for me, and as I expected it is unputdownable.

No-one's life is as perfect as it seems and Beth, Ruby and Lauren are no exception. To the outside world they appear to have it all, but under the surface they're struggling, each hiding a huge secret. One earth-shattering event causes the weight to be lifted from their shoulders, the truth to be revealed and life-long friendships to be formed.

We are all guilty of presenting a curated view of our lives to the rest of the world. Social media warps our reality and has a profound impact on feelings of self-esteem and confidence. Dawn O'Porter does not shy away from the real issues that many women face behind closed doors in this book. She addresses a number of serious issues including; mental health, anxiety and shame, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). actively fighting the stigma surrounding all three.

What I love about this book and O'Porter's writing in general is her honest and representative characters, and the relationships they share. Beth, Ruby and Lauren are all loveable and relatable in their own ways and through them she emphasizes the need for self-care and most importantly sisterhood in the tumultuous world that we live in. Her whole vibe is about women building each other up, instead of tearing each other down and I love that. She is also wonderfully uncompromising when it comes to discussing women's wants and needs, no embarrassment or hushed tones here. She really is a women's writer.

'So Lucky' has everything you want in a book. It can tug on your heartstrings on one page and make you belly laugh on the next. It can quell whatever negative feelings you might be having in the moment and it is ultimately an uplifting experience.
