The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek - Rhett McLaughlin & Link Neal

Nostalgia, friendship and fun!

I would happily describe myself as a Mythical Beast. Some people will know what that means, and others will think I have completely lost my mind! All it really means is that I have been an avid follower of Rhett and Link on their award winning Youtube show Good Mythical Morning for years. They never fail to cheer me up and have helped me through some tough times. Admittedly I bought their debut novel off the back of this, but I can honestly say that this book can stand on it's own two feet as a thoroughly enjoyable read. While it probably won't win any awards for being a literary masterpiece, it delivers the brand of energy and fun that those of us in the know have come to expect from the internet duo.

'The Lost Causes of Bleak Creek' follows the story of two close friends Rex McClendon and Leif Nelson as strange occurrences start happening in their quiet, traditional Southern town. Together, and with a little help along the way, they must save a friend and unearth a truth that will shake the town's inhabitants to their very core.

It is easy to tell when reading that the authors were driven by a strong sense of nostalgia for a simpler time in which they grew up (after all they do say write about what you know!) But the star of this show is undoubtedly the relationship between the two main characters that mimics that of their real-life counterparts. They have brilliantly written about their two different personalities that compliment and stimulate each other, and this makes for a truly engaging read.

This is a sci-fi book with cultist themes that while tense and scary in the right places is simply fun and entertaining, and much like their style of internet comedy, this book is great for children and adults alike. Whether they choose to continue their foray into fiction as #1 best-selling authors, who knows? But if they do, I know I'll be buying a copy for some guaranteed laughs and an easy read.
